The Matrix Has You by Thomas Ousterhout brings the fringes of cutting edge technology and the human imagination together and creates a revolutionary vision of the future that blurs the lines between man and machine. Using the popular film The Matrix as the metaphor, Ousterhout builds an impeccably supported argument that humans and machines, and virtual world technology, are headed for a common future where human perceptions and virtual experience will merge. The resulting “Matrix-like” reality is not only possible, according to the author, it is closer than we imagine. Using the most recent references in popular and scientific literature, as well as the input and prognostications of leaders in the field of cognition, robotics, artificial intelligence, and brain-computer research, The Matrix Has You paints a future for humanity that is both awesome and ominous. Written in clear and accessible prose, author Ousterhout has produced a book that is both provocative and entertaining.
Thomas Ousterhout has a degree in psychology from Loyola Marymount University. Through his professional psychology career he has given several presentations to university sponsored research symposiums where Ph.D.s, professors, professionals, and other experts engaged in impressive and interactive question and answer sessions. The success of these presentations gathered significant positive attention which provided him with an invitation to give a presentation to the Association of Computing Machinery, which is the largest computing society in the world. Afterwards he was cordially invited to join the society and has since joined almost twenty other scientific and technological societies related to virtual reality, artificial intelligence, and autonomous vehicles. Not only has Mr. Ousterhout been a contributing member of these societies, but he also has readily available access to an abundance of information through attending local, national, and international meetings and conferences.

Sometime in the future this book will be looked back upon as the definitive first view of “how it all happened.” Ousterhout bases this most interesting study in history. His analysis of the earliest attempts at virtual reality, going back well before the last century are both fascinating and document the enevitabiliity of current trends. This is not science fiction, but rather a most readable examination of the art and science of today’s massive computer based assault on the way we see and live in our high-teck world. It is a serious work by a young researcher who has a very light and easy style.

The Matrix Has You As a novice to the Matrix world, I was fascinated by this book. It explains the virtual reality world in terms the layman can understand and appreciate. It made the viewing of the movie Avatar even more exciting and realistic. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wonders what our futures will look like.
