    Smith & Chetwynd’s book covers many of the fundamental design considerations for ultraprecision devices. This is done from a physiscist’s perspective starting with a discussion of the basis for simple beam ananlysis. It proceeds through optimal constraint and flexure design, along with actuator and detector selection. Simplified design examples are included. Finally, a selection of construction materials along with their physical properties are presented, along with a discussion of optimization on that basis.
