People and Technology: Eight Ways You Can Be Effective Too!
June 6, 2010 by AboutNanoWires.com · Leave a Comment
The incredible level and use of technology underway today never ceases to amaze me! We are simply overwhelmed by it. Something as simple as a decision to purchase a cell phone can quickly become a paralyzing experience because of the ‘technical’ options we have. Place this in the context of our work and everyday lives and we often don’t know where to begin. All this talk of genetics, robotics, artificial intelligence, and nanotechnology! (Huh?)
Research suggests that those who are ‘early adapters’ of technology (and new things in general) are most likely also those who will not only survive well in life but can be successful. Where will you fall on the continuum of life’s experiences and results when all is said and done? Will you be able to keep up?
Following are eight suggestions to help guide you to a point of success in this ever increasing technological world:
1.Make a true commitment to learn new things, even those things that seem totally impossible to you. Recent research indicates that if you force yourself to learn something new your brain will actually adapt and make it easier for you to understand the subject.
2.Develop a strategy for what you need to learn and what technology you think you will need at work and in your personal life. Having a clear picture of what you believe will help you heightens your chances of success.
3.Once you’re clear about what technology to master then research all the potential sources for learning that technology (books, magazines, Internet sites, television programs, etc.)
4.Educate yourself on the subject matter…literally become ‘expert’ at it. Try webinars, college courses, books, free website links and materials, etc.
5.Networking is a great way to meet people who have a passion for a given subject and many are willing to share their thoughts and expertise. Join affinity groups, professional networking organizations, associations, etc.
6.Once you begin to feel comfortable with your command of the technology offer yourself as a tutor or mentor of others whose knowledge of the subject is less than your. Volunteer for teaching assignments or presentations on the basic “how to” of the technology.
7.Be persistent in your pursuit of knowledge on the subject technology. Stick with the learning process!!
8.Renew your understanding and passion for the technology. The ‘half-life’ of technology in every area we can think of is incredibly brief. If you learn to keep up over time it will be easier to determine what you don’t know.
There you have it! You now know eight ways to ensure that you not only keep up with our technology-driven world but actually thrive in the process. Good luck!

In the strong economic growth, stable political situation, rich university / state-funded projects and increasing foreign investment, driven by Russia’s semiconductor industry is becoming more and more powerful. Marks a move into this new era is the recent commissioning of a series of semiconductor manufacturing process: from 130nm, 90nm until 65nm, and 45nm technology also announced the launch of the project, in addition to the Russian nanotechnology industry irksome to upgrade, and polysilicon materials, including 10 manufacturing projects, including significant progress in the field of PV.
Russia’s high level of education, academic research in semiconductor physics history, precision applications (aviation, communications, etc.) in electronic systems manufacturing and the rapid growth of industrial equipment and materials manufacturers to create a large number of new opportunities, coupled with a stable political environment and good business climate, Russia’s economy is prosperous development. In 2006 the GDP increased by 6.8% growth in 2007 will be even greater. With the rapid expansion of IT-related markets, governments and enterprises in the ICT infrastructure investment continue to grow. With the region’s growth in consumer spending, local semiconductor manufacturing has become the country’s priority development objectives, and Russia’s semiconductor manufacturing is also rising among the number of items.
Russian semiconductor manufacturing projects
1. Russia’s largest semiconductor manufacturer and its parent company, Mikron has been an Sitronics reached an agreement with STMicroelectronics. Under the agreement, Mikron will receive from their technology road map from the 0.18-micron CMOS EEPROM process until the 65nm manufacturing technology. Although the implementation of the project subject to export control issues affect the delay of three months, but the project is still scheduled to start in the first quarter of 2008 (the first block of silicon production).
2. “Angstrem T” has been partnering with AMD began production at its wafer fab 130nm CMOS process. This fab is set up purely for the global foundry market. Angstrem the production line program launched in late 2009, and intends to further expand production capacity by 2010, and the upgrade to 90nm ~ 65nm skills. After the completion of the technology upgrade, Angstrem deep plowing will start the local market?? Continuously improve local market share.
3.2007 8 at the end, Advanced Electronic Systems (AES) announced that the company plans to acquire Altis, intended to produce customized products in the 200mm wafer supply the European and Russian market. Headquartered in Moscow, a holding company Global Information Services (GIS) is the parent company of AES. GIS by the Russian Ministry of Commerce and Industry jointly set up with the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Russian Development Bank Vnesheconombank and the Russian Government. Altis acquisition shows the GIS industry companies through further acquisitions and production base, and constantly promote the transfer of technology on the market heating up.
4. In October 2007, Russian Economic Development under the Ministry of Investment Commission approved the construction of a technology Mikron Sitronics to hit the 65 ~ 45nm fab production plan to flash memory chips. Therefore, from now until 2009, Sitronics will invest 2.3 billion U.S. dollars building the fab, plant construction will begin in 2008 and plans to put into operation in 2009. This new fab will serve as an independent business, estimated to hold 51% stake in Sitronics, the remaining 49% of the shares held by the state. It is reported that capital investment will come from control of the Russian Ministry of Economic Development Investment Fund.
Investment bank Credit Suisse (Credit Suisse) was evaluated for the project. According to the investment bank’s report said the discounted return on investment period of 10 years, the weighted average cost of capital of 8.64%. Wafer fab will reach 30,000 square meters of production area, of which 10,000 square meters of clean room area. Initial production capacity of 3,000 pieces per month, and further expand to 10,000 pieces per month. The new fab will have 1,700 employees.
This new wafer manufacturing semiconductor chips for the local market, products include digital TV, GLONAS system receiver, 3G mobile communications with the SIM card and other consumer electronic products.

Artificial Intelligence and Intelligent Research

Over lunch today I caught up with a friend who has recently returned from a short course at Singularity University (http://singularityu.org/). If, like me prior to today, you are not overly familiar with Singularity University, its reason for being is to explore “exponentially advancing technologies in order to address humanity’s grand challenges”. SU has quite the ambitious goal. But with the backing of founding partners including Google and headquartered at NASA’s Ames campus, I was certainly encouraged to learn more about how SU could facilitate the kind of thinking required to achieve its ambitions.
As expected of an institution based at NASA, the thinking taking place at SU is heavily influenced by developments in nanotechnology, artificial intelligence, robotics and biotechnology. What does this have to do with the market research industry you may ask? My mind turned to research when I was looking through some of the thought provoking papers generated through SU and in particular one presented at SU by James Canton, the CEO of the Institute for Global Futures, a San Francisco based think tank (http://singularityu.org/blog/page/3/) In his paper, predicts Canton the internet will be embedded just about everywhere, from appliances, to cars, houses and eventually even people.
In Canton’s vision, everything will have an IP address and in this “blended reality” information will be constantly streaming at and around us. Canton explains this as our own “personal Internet layer…that lives in your own personal Internet cloud [and] deciphers what’s next”. Canton looks to the development of such artificial intelligence to process huge amounts of real time data to help solve health, poverty and population as some of “humanity’s grand challenges”.
For the research industry, this reality may make data collection obsolete. In Canton’s world, people and all their thoughts and information will be blended with data being transmitted through new infrastructure capable of handling such large scale flows. Although the ability to manage data of that magnitude may not be readily available, based on widely held beliefs of exponential improvements in technology going back to Moore’s Law (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moore’s_law) in 1965, such a reality is feasible in the future. If researchers have all the data they require available through the scenario proffered by Canton, will this be seen as the holy grail of immediate and completely accurate data collection? For some it may be seen as taking away the corner stone of many a research operation, advising on methodologies and handling of data collection.
Although the Canton hypothesis may be some way off, it does remind us that in all industries, including research, there needs to be an awareness of potential trends in technology and adaptation to such technologies. It may be that such thoughts provide the impetus to organisations to adjust business models to ensure that they are positioned to avoid redundancy from technology and to take advantage of any future trends. And if you want to have a look through the SU website for some thinking that’s out on the edge and be inspired, according to my friend, the 9 day executive course is a life changing experience.
