Science and Application of Nanotubes

May 21, 2010 by · 1 Comment

Product Description
This volume is a result of the Nanotube ’99 Workshop, held in late July 1999. It is the most up-to-date compendium representing the state of the art in the rapidly developing field of nanotubes. An important focus is on the relative merits of the various techniques used to synthesize nanotubes of carbon and other materials. Another important issue addressed is the effect of synthesis conditions on the multitude of morphologies that have by now been observed, and the characterization of the structures. Important advances are reported in the understanding of mechanical and chemical properties of nanotubes, including their potential use for hydrogen storage and nano-manipulators in micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS). The unusual electronic properties of nanotubes, which seem to attract most attention in the field, are represented accordingly, alongside the first likely commercial application of nanotubes in high-efficiency flat-panel displays.

Focus on Nanotube Research

May 19, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

Product Description
A novel way of arranging the atomic structure of a substance so that it can be made thousands of times stronger than in its native state. Often used to make duranium a further ten thousand times stronger. Thus, a lump of duranium can be made over ten million times stronger than the equivalent block of titanium. A one dimensional fullerene (a convex cage of atoms with only hexagonal and/or pentagonal faces) with a cylindrical shape. Carbon nanotubes discovered in 1991 by Sumio Iijima resemble rolled up graphite, although they can not really be made that way. Depending on the direction that the tubes appear to have been rolled (quantified by the ‘chiral vector’), they are known to act as conductors or semiconductors. Nanotubes are a proving to be useful as molecular components for nanotechnology. This book assembles and presents new and important research in the field.

The Management of Technology and Innovation: A Strategic Approach

May 16, 2010 by · 1 Comment

Product Description
In today’s economy the management of technology is a major factor in the process layout employed by the firm, in systems used by the company, in its structural design, and in its product marketability. This text uses technology as a guiding focus for explaining the strategic management process. Each chapter splits into two acts: (1) chapters open with material synthesized from leading theorists and consultants; (2) chapters conclude with discussions of the applicable techniques for successfully exploiting technology and innovation.

Sensors Based on Nanostructured Materials

May 15, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

Product Description

“Sensors Based on Nanostructured Materials” presents the many different techniques and methods of fabricating materials on the nanometer scale, and, specifically, the utilization of these resources with regard to sensors. The techniques which are described are studied from an application-oriented perspective, providing the reader with a broader perspective of the types of nanostructured sensors available than other books which concentrate on theoretical situations related to specific fabrication techniques. Rather than focus on possible techniques for future fabrication, this book describes and explores well established techniques for fabricating sensors using nanostructured materials, and serves as a multidisciplinary text which considers the uses in optics, electronics, and biochemistry.

Unifying Concepts in Granular Media and Glasses: From the Statistical Mechanics of Granular Media to the Theory of Jamming

May 14, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

Product Description
Deep connections are emerging in the physics of non-thermal systems, such as granular media, and other “complex systems” such as glass formers, spin glasses, colloids or gels. This book discusses the unifying physical theories, developed in recent years, for the description of these systems. The special focus of the book is on recent important developments in the formulation of a Statistical Mechanics approach to granular media and the description of out-of-equilibrium dynamics, such as “jamming” phenomena, ubiquitous in these “complex systems”. The book collects contributions from leading researchers in these fields, providing both an introduction, at a graduate level, to these rapidly developing subjects and featuring an up to date, self contained, presentation of theoretical and experimental developments for researchers in areas ranging from Chemistry, to Engineering and Physical Sciences.

· the book discusses very hot topics in physical sciences
· it includes contributions from the most prominent researchers in the area
· it is clearly written and self contained
