Composites with Micro- and Nano-Structure: Computational Modeling and Experiments

Product Description
This book contains selected, extended papers presented in the thematic ECCOMAS conference on Composites with Micro- and Nano-Structure (CMNS) – Computational Modelling and Experiments held in Liptovský Mikuláš, Slovakia, in May 28 to 31, 2007, as well as three other papers.
Recent experimental and computational results demonstrate that materials reinforced with stiff particles and fibres can obtain substantial improvements in stiffness, thermal conductivity and electro-magnetic properties. Materials reinforced with fibres can have very different properties in different directions. With these new materials the importance of computational simulations and experimental verifications also increases.
The book contains atomistic and continuum numerical methods and experimental validation for composite materials reinforced with particles or fibres, porous materials, homogenization and other important topics for research in this field.

Nanoparticles and Nanodevices in Biological Applications: The INFN Lectures – Vol I
May 3, 2010 by AboutNanoWires.com · Leave a Comment
Product Description
This is the first volume in a series of books on selected topics in Nanoscale Science and Technology based on lectures given at the well-known INFN schools of the same name. The aim of this collection is to provide a reference corpus of suitable, introductory material to relevant subfields, as they mature over time, by gathering the significantly expanded and edited versions of tutorial lectures, given over the years by internationally known experts.
The present set of notes results in particular from the participation and dedication of prestigious lecturers, such as Vincenzo Balzani, Santina Carnazza, Andrea Salis Barbara Panessa-Warren and Stefano Bellucci. As usual, the lectures were subsequently carefully edited and reworked, taking into account the extensive follow-up discussions.
A tutorial lecture by Vincenzo Balzani and collaborators (Univ. Bologna, Italy) introduces the reader to the topic of molecular devices and machines, seen as a journey into the nano world. Santina Carnazza (Univ. of Messina, Italy) contribution deals with surface bio-functionalization aimed to enhance promonocytic cells adhesion and spatial confinement, and micro-patterning of polymer surfaces. Andrea Salis and co-workers (Univ. Cagliari, Italy) go about biotechnological applications of lipases immobilized onto porous materials, i.e. biodiesel production and biosensors.
Understanding the biological effects of nanoparticles at the mesoscopic (microPET) and microscopic levels (light and electron microscopy) is essential to predict nanoparticle processing, degradation and excretion in cells, and mammalian systems in general. In this respect, Barbara Panessa-Warren (BNL, USA) in her lecture provides the reader with an overview of the types of phenomena occuring with living cells and tissues exposed to nanoparticles, as well as new experimental data on the biological cell and tissue responses in vitro and in vivo to nanoparticles designed for bio-medical use. An extensive contribution to review recent results about the toxicity of nanomaterials, concentrating in particular on carbon nanotubes, is the subject of the tutorial by Stefano Bellucci (INFN-LNF, Italy).

Nanocasting: A Versatile Strategy for Creating Nanostructured Porous Materials
April 9, 2010 by AboutNanoWires.com · Leave a Comment
Product Description
This book focuses on the synthesis of porous solids from the viewpoint of methodology and introduces the science of nanocasting from fundamental principles to their use in synthesis of various materials. It starts by outlining the principles of nanocasting, requirements to the templates and precursors and the tools needed to probe matter at the nanoscale level. It describes how to synthesize nano structured porous solids with defined characteristics and finally discusses the functionalization and application of porous solids. Special attention is given to new developments in this field and future perspectives. Topics covered include inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, solution chemistry, sol-gel and interface science, acid-base equilibria, electrochemistry, biochemistry and confined synthesis.

Low-Dimensional Solids
March 3, 2010 by AboutNanoWires.com · Leave a Comment
Product Description
With physical properties that often may not be described by the transposition of physical laws from 3D space across to 2D or even 1D space, low-dimensional solids exhibit a high degree of anisotropy in the spatial distribution of their chemical bonds. This means that they can demonstrate new phenomena such as charge-density waves and can display nanoparticulate (0D), fibrous (1D) and lamellar (2D) morphologies.
Low-Dimensional Solids presents some of the most recent research into the synthesis and properties of these solids and covers:
- Metal Oxide Nanoparticles
- Inorganic Nanotubes and Nanowires
- Biomedical Applications of Layered Double Hydroxides
- Carbon Nanotubes and Related Structures
- Superconducting Borides
Introducing topics such as novel layered superconductors, inorganic-DNA delivery systems and the chemistry and physics of inorganic nanotubes and nanosheets, Low-Dimensional Solids discusses some of the most exciting concepts in this developing field.
Additional volumes in the Inorganic Materials Series:
Molecular Materials | Functional Oxides | Porous Materials | Energy Materials
